Old Bolzano waste-to-energy plant

New opportunities from an obsolete plant

Demolition work on the old Bolzano waste-to-energy plant was commissioned by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano; about 8 months in total worth 2.7 million euros.

The plant, no longer in operation since 2013 and secured in 2015, consisted of two incineration lines, the first started in 1988, the second in 1996, each consisting of a waste incineration and heat recovery system, a flue gas cleaning section and a thermal cycle for energy production. The work was carried out without any obstruction to the new plant, which is adjacent to the construction site, so as to ensure the continuous operation of the new waste-to-energy plant, the viability along the Brenner Motorway and via Lungo Isarco Sinistro, and access to the workforce to the Seab warehouses.

Area Rizzoli

A symbolic and sustainable demolition

The demolition of the RCS Media Group S.p.A. building in Via Rizzoli, Milan, is a significant example and fits into a broader context of redevelopment of the entire area: one year of work and a total area divided into 6 lots for a total volume of 161,500 cubic meters.

The decommissioned industrial complex will be replaced by a neighbourhood known as “bio-friendly”, inspired by sustainability and welfare criteria. Strip-out works and the removal of waste and plastic materials, Wood and metal were carried out according to the specifications provided by the U.S. Green Building Council, which regulates the construction of the property and its subsequent life cycle with a view to obtaining the Leed (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification at the design stage.

Ex centro servizi

New liveable and safe space for the city of Bergamo

In December 2023, an agreement was signed between the Municipalities of Bergamo, Orio al Serio and Azzano San Paolo, in collaboration with Vitali S.p.A. and A2A S.p.A., to launch a shared urban regeneration project for the area known as the ‘Ex Centro Servizi’. This area, located in the territory of the Municipality of Bergamo and adjacent to the municipal borders with Orio al Serio and Azzano San Paolo, covers a total land area of approximately 47,316 square metres.

The existing building, which had been abandoned for years and was in an advanced state of decay, represented a critical issue for the urban context and the area’s safety. The redevelopment of the site was therefore necessary for reasons of hygiene, urban decency and public interest. Preliminary strip-out activities started at the end of 2023, while the actual demolition started in January 2024. These interventions constitute the first phase of a large urban transformation project, aimed at the construction of a new logistics building. The new development has been focused on environmental sustainability and energy efficiency, with the aim of obtaining BREEAM certification. The project aims to restore value to the area, integrating it harmoniously into the urban fabric and contributing to the overall redevelopment of the area.

Orti Nuovi, ex Canossiane

A historic building becomes a new residential neighbourhood

In the heart of Bergamo, Vitali S.p.A. has played a leading role in the “Orti Nuovi” project, an urban regeneration project that will transform the former Canossian Sisters' complex in Via San Tomaso into a new residential and cultural space, under the banner of sustainability and respect for history.

Demolition work, which began in 2023, has involved the most degraded parts of the complex, with work carried out in a controlled manner and with low environmental impact. The project envisages the construction of 62 high-quality flats, with private gardens, coworking spaces, offices and common areas, in a balance between contemporary architecture and historical memory. A new cycle and pedestrian path will connect Via San Giovanni with the GAMeC courtyard, crossing the canal on a footbridge and integrating with the Suardi park. In addition, the historic Orti di San Tomaso area will be handed over to the municipality, doubling the public green space in the area and offering new spaces for the community. ‘Orti Nuovi’ is a concrete example of sustainable regeneration: a place that combines living, culture and nature, restoring value and identity to a historic area of the city.

Cavalcavia A4

Safe mechanical demolition, in just one night

Spectacular demolition on the night of 13 and 14 December 2014, as part of the construction of the TEEM - (Tangenziale Est Esterna di Milano), of the motorway overpass between Omate and Caponago on which the provincial 125 skips the A4 highway.

The demolition was completed on a night during which the A4 motorway was closed to traffic in the section between the tollbooths of Cambiago and Agrate. Eight demolition machines and a 400-tonne crane were used. Initially they entered it proceeded with the mechanical demolition: while four demolition machines, equipped with a pneumatic hammer, demolivano the bridge plate, the other four, equipped with pliers and hydraulic crushers, removed the iron of the armor. At the end of this phase, the crane was used to place the bridge beams on the ground. During all the work, a tarp was placed to prevent debris from falling onto the road surface.

Autostrada A14

A new backbone for Adriatic infrastructure

The challenge of modernising infrastructure is among the most important and complex in the country. Adequate professionalism is required to carry out this task, and the Vitali Group has been awarded an important contract: the demolition of 50 overpasses on the A14 motorway in the section between Rimini Nord and Senigallia.

This is a major project for the extension and construction of the third lane of the A14 Bologna-Bari, one of the busiest and most important motorways in Italy. The works will be carried out at night so as not to create problems for the circulation of vehicles, particularly intense during the day. These types of contracts are extremely delicate, both for the context in which they operate and for the very complexity of the operation to be carried out, can only be performed by companies with cutting-edge technologies and machinery that make safety and respect of time a strength. The design and execution of demolition works are planned in detail to minimize any type of risk, in full control of safety regulations, all accompanied by technical expertise of excellence, reliability and respect of time.

Capendeguy

Barre de Capendeguy: an eco-monster with an explosive end

A demolition operation in Béziers of 492 apartments for 300,000 cubic metres of reinforced concrete demolished in 11 seconds. The echo monster, called "Barre de Capendeguy" was built in the seventies.

The demolition has required a considerable effort given the proximity of the structure to the historic center. The technicians worked for six months before being able to reach the final phase of demolition with explosives. Microcharges of 450 kilograms were used of TNT. At the end, 65,000 tons of debris were collected. These were then crushed, shredded, separated and placed on a conveyor belt and taken to a quarry. From here they will start again to be then reused as filling of the bottom layer of a road.

Porto di Civitavecchia

From the demolition of old buildings to new construction opportunities

Among the demolition works carried out by the Vitali Group with the aid of demolition vehicles equipped with long arms there is a very particular one, performed at the old port of Civitavecchia.

The demolition of silos for the storage of materials placed on the Civitavecchia dock. The area on which stood the site to be demolished is within the historic port, in particular is the one between the 7-8 docks better known as Molo del Bicchiere. The shape is almost rectangular with dimensions of about 65 m x 230 m and has a maximum height of 47 m from the countryside. The industrial complex developed longitudinally parallel to the quays.

The “buildings” to be demolished were more than half a century old, so demolition had to be carried out with even greater accuracy. Some structural parts were now unreinforced and had to rely on the concrete inner core for their stability. The structures of the circular silos all presented a widespread state of substantial suffering, aggravated by the reduced thickness of the already oxidized reinforcement.

The general conditions of the site therefore required the use of mechanical means suitable for carrying out special controlled demolitions. For this operation, as in all other operations, the Group has adopted innovative techniques and specific treatments that, in a second phase, have allowed the recovery and reuse of demolition materials, with an eye to environmental sustainability. The intervention lasted about 2 months, in full respect of the time set by the client. For the execution of the works were used 2 crawler demolition vehicles of which one equipped with 1.200 qli telescopic boom that reaches a height of more than 50 m and equipped with 25 q.li hydraulic gripper and an excavator 400 q.li equipped with 50qli hydraulic gripper.

This type of contract, extremely delicate for the complexity of the operation to be performed, requires high qualifications in terms of engineering skills and equipment. The planning and execution of a demolition is also planned down to the last detail, with the aim of minimizing any type of risk, in full compliance with safety regulations and budgeted times.
